Hello ---I was born in Redruth, Cornwall, England. I emigrated to Canada with my family 4 years later in 1953. I now live in Whitby, Ontario (just east of Toronto). I would really appreciate sharing any common threads about my own Kneebone history with other "Kneebone's." I understand that there are different "branches" of the Kneebone geneology in at least England, the United States and Australia. My father (Kenneth Robert) was born in 1923. He grew up in Nanycgollon/Burngollow/St. Austell, Cornwall, England. My grandfather (Robert) was born in 1894 and married Frances Mewten. He had two children --- Ursula and Kenneth (my father). My great grandfather (also Robert) was born in 1859 and married Margaret Jane Drew. In turn, his father (Israel) was born in 1819 and married Mary. I have no family record before this 1819 birth date. I understand (not confirmed) that Kneebone's go back to ancient celtic heritage --- Brittany (to St. Michael's Mount?), Germany (Bavaria?), Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Cornwall. Some tradition of being shoe makers. Maybe a Spanish-Moraccan connection. Worked on Moraccan leather, making shoes. Cordwinders --- skilled leather artisans. Karinbone -- man who lived on top of the hill --- responsible for the safety of the valley. Kneebowne --- stone masons. Kneebone --- breakaway from Carneborne, Wendron (spelled Carnebwen 1298 --- hence Ebwen's rockpile). If you like, I would be pleased to send a more detailed history what I have been able to put together. Long way to go --- but at least it is a start! Regards ---- Paul Kneebone.
