In the 1840 census for Orange Co. NY State we find Peter Kanuff. Back then, double f meant s. At that time
he was age 70-80. Peter's family lists a young boy 5 to 10. One female <5, 1 female 10-15 and 1F 40-50.
I am doubly Canouse, more pure bred than most as my gg grandmothers were Canouse sisters. I am not sure this Peter Kanouse is the progenitor, but he was in the town of Minisink, Orange Co. in 1840 and there was a Cornelius Mesler in the same town.
Here see the next census - 1850 - for the adjacent town of Deerpark, Orange Co. The household of Cornelius Mesler.
Cornelius Misler 46 farmer
Rhoda 43
Andrew J. Mesler 22 Farmer NY
Mary Canouse 17 NJ
Sarah Mesler 14 NY
William Canouse 12 NY or NJ
Margaret J. Canouse 9 NY
Mahala Canouse 5 NY
My ggg grandfather John Nickerson bought property from Cornelius in 1855. Johns' son William H. Nickerson married Margaret. Lewis Trissler married Mary. In the next generation
Margaret Nickersons son William married Mary Trisslers daughter Jennie.

So the question is - who was Peter Canouse?

Seems to me the old guy died and the children were adopted by Cornelius Mesler. Curtis Nickerson
