Elijah (b.1772) Son of Amos Knapp & Phebe Nelson - Prove it !!
Hello,
I've been interested in the genealogy of Elijah Knapp, of Erwin (Painted Post), and Lindley, Steuben County, New York, for over twenty years.Elijah Knapp was born about 1772 in Connecticut. He was married about 1794 to Currance Barnes. He moved from Connecticut to New York after 1801 and ended up in Steuben County, New York by 1820.He was killed by a rolling log in 1838.He had sons named Thomas, Abraham, Frederick, Shadrack, Jacob, and Derrick.(Some online genealogies attach a son named "Elijah"who was born in 1820 to him but this is an error, said son actually being the son of Nathan Knapp and Phebe Webster of Farmington, Tioga County, Pennsylvania and Berrien County, Michigan.)
Many online genealogies, and the Knapp Database, list Elijah Knapp who married Currance Barnes as the son of Amos Knapp and Phebe Nelson. My research leads me to believe he has likely been mis-assigned.Can anyone give me sources that prove this Elijah Knapp is a son of Amos Knapp and Phebe Nelson?Maybe the will of Amos Knapp? If his assignment to Amos Knapp is based on the Nicholas Knapp Genealogy does it give a source?
If he is the son of Amos Knapp then I think the line may have been mis-assigned a generation or two back.Something isn't adding up.
Can anyone help me?I think I may have opened a big can of worms here and I lay awake at night trying to make sense of the connections, convolutions, and contradictions into which my research is leading me.
Thank you,
