Headline: John Knagge, hard-working sportsman Publication Date: November 17, 1994 Source: The Tucson Citizen Page: 5C Subjects: Region: Arizona Obituary: John T. Knagge was 6 when he came with his family from Indiana to Tucson on Christmas Day 1908 - six years before Arizona was to become a state. Over the next 86 years, Mr. Knagge not only would make Tucson and Arizona his home, but his mission - protecting wildlife through management and furthering the sportsman's way of life. Mr. Knagge died Sunday at age 92 after battling Alzheimer's disease for the past 13 years. Funeral services were held yesterday. Mr. Knagge's wildlife conservation began early. In 1918, the Tucson High School student was among 11 volunteers who stocked Sabino Canyon, each packing in 10-gallon cans filled with 2,000 fingerling rainbow and brook trout. Over the years, he repeated the process at both upper Sabino and Lemmon creeks. Mr. Knagge was one of the founders of the Tucson Game Protective Association, the Arizona Game Protective Association (now called the Arizona Wildlife Federation) and the Tucson Rod and Gun Club. He was one of the leaders in a drive to establish the Arizona Game and Fish Department and Commission. For many years, Mr. Knagge worked as a cattle rancher, serving as foreman of the De Baud Ranch near Sabino Canyon from 1921 to 1927. He also worked as the master mechanic at Gilland Ranch in Oracle. He retired from the Veterans Administration Hospital in 1968 after 36 years as a mechanic and chief engineer. He was a member of the Pima County Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, serving as its president from 1948 to 1952. He is survived by his wife, Mary Knagge of Tucson; two children, Thomas W. Knagge of Tucson and Mary Clement of San Fernando, Calif.; three sisters, Helen of California, Jean of Tucson and Nancy of Prescott; a brother, Francis of Phoenix; 12 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- iv. I have no idea who the lady is that's mentioned as being his wife. Dad and Gerry had 1 child, Pauline Winifred, who did live in Lancaster, CA, but recently moved to Sand Point, ID. Her last name is Halstead.(b. 9-13-47 Tucson, AZ). About John Thomas Knagge: His first wife was Mabel Jordan; his second wife was Mary whom you had information about from the Tucson newspaper. v. HILDA ELLA4 KNAGGE (JOHN THEODORE3, JOHN THEODORE2, KNAGGE1) was born July 07, 1889 in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, and died May 01, 1980 in Torrance, Los Angeles County, California. She married (1) RICHARD LEECH MODIE, son of ROBERT MODIE and GERTRUDE FLOREN. He was born March 28, 1890 in El Paso, Texas, and died July 16, 1917 in Nogales, Santa Cruz County, Arizona. She married (2) GEORGE MCLURE in Arizona. She married (3) FINIS EWING MCGUIRE Abt. 1920 in Arizona. Child of HILDA KNAGGE and RICHARD MODIE is: i. GERTRUDE OLGA5 MODIE, b. May 24, 1904, San Francisco, California; d. April 21, 1964, San Jose, California. Notes for BUD LAWRENCE CASEY: My grandmother Olga (Gertrude Modie) has told me that she believes that Bud was born in Butte, Silver Bow County, Montana. She has also said that he had some cousins named Keenan. I haven't made any connection yet (2-2-98) with either Butte, or Keenans. Olga also said that Budd stated his birth as having occurred in San Francisco, because he was an illegal alien. Since all of the records from San Francisco were destroyed in the fire, this was a convenient way to gain citizenship. I, personally, believe that Budd was an illegal alien from Mexico, not Canada as my grandmother has suggested. The only thing that is certain is that my grandmother knew precious little about this man who was, for a brief time, her husband, and who is my paternal grandfather. My grandmother has also said that Budd was in the Merchant Marines, and that early on in his life he had a connection with organized crime (prohibition?) and served time in Walla Walla state prison. He died, probably alone, in San Jose, Calif. where he had worked as a custodian for Our Lady's Home, a Catholic home for the aged. It appears that his burial was provided by the Sisters of Our Lady's Home, as he was interred in St. Mary's Cemetery, Oakland, California. Also, Budd was an only child according to my grandmother- but her memory is so sketchy, and often selective that her recollections could be misleading. Notify Administrator about this message?
