Charles & Louisa Kluting

If you look at the 1870 census from Crawford Township, Osage, IL, post office-Linnwood. It clearly says Charles and Louisa (not Bertha), whom I believe may have been a first wife and the mother of Louisa-age 13, Nancy-age 10, Cassina-age 8, Henry-age 7, William-age 9. It also says they are from Prussia (now Germany).

By 1880, Charles is living in Grayson, TX with a new wife, different age. The name is very hard to read on the census, but it sure doesn't look like Bertha. It clearly starts with a B and ends with a TA, not THA, as in Bertha. It is interpruted at Bearata in one place, but that seems an odd name to me. I wonder if she had a German name that was "Americanized" to Bertha later? In 1880, Henry and William are still living at home at ages 18 and 16, but no new children are listed.

Hope that helps. I'm researching for a friend, so this is not my family.

yvonne in ABQ, NM
