Dear Jessie:
I saw your letter on and thought I would throw this out for you. Many records on the Kloepper family can be found at the Concordia Historical Institute at 801 DeMun Ave. St. Louis, MO 63105. My family settled here in Southwestern Illinois in an area known as "Horse Prairie" about 3-4 miles east of Red Bud, Illinois. According to my great Aunt Elsa Kloepper, the family here originated here with passage of my great great grandfather, Wilhelm Heinrich Carl Ehregott Kloepper who was born on Nov. 17 at Todtenhausen,Minden,Prussia and immigrated in 1846 to the Horse Prairie Illinois area. Apparently he, as the story goes, was a young man in 1846 and without money for transportation, hid inside a pickle barrel on board a ship carrying cattle headed for the port of New Orleans. From there he made his way aboard a paddleboat to St. Louis where he met his wife also from the same town Todtenhausen in present day Germany. Apparently she was of considerable means, as after a short time they crossed the Mississippi River about 40 miles to the southeast of ST. Louis and settled in the Red Bud IL area where they bought perhaps as much as 1200 acres of ground in Randolph County. Not much more is known by me. I hope this information may be of some use to you. Some of the information above was able to be verified by historical records at Concordia Historical Inst.

Good Luck and let me know if you have any other questions or if you can supply any other information.
