I am new to this forum, and I see that this post is old, but your post was interesting to me.
My grandfather was named Michael Klem, and he claimed to have come from Austria as a very young child in the early 1900's. I will have to check on the exact date that he came over. After he died, one of his older sisters told us that he was not from Austria after all. She claimed that they came from the Ukraine...
He grew up in New Jersey and New York, and he was one of 12 brothers and sisters--we heard about this all of the time.
I have not looked into much on this side (my father's side) of the family. My grandfather's past is a mystery to me. I will try to re-post when I find out more. This may not be the man you are looking for, but he is at least yet another Klem.
