Alice,
I presume I may call you that; Klee is pronounced in the Americanized version (K-Lee).Now, where to begin...
All census information I have seen on Christian L. Klee lists either Germany, Frankfort, but mostly Hanou.I received a response to a quire on another board from a "Robert T" who indicated that Hanou is very close to Frankfort and is in the former state of Electoral Hesse (in German, Kurhessen... your Anna's Kurhesse). Many census takers misspelled Hanau as Hanan, and we believe Christian simply responded to the question with Frankfort, that being easier on the American ear.So, Hanou is a 99% bet!Forget Phorzheim, that is in the former German state of Baden about 100 miles south of Hanou; we think Christian's wife's (Elizabeth Arkeit, born in NY) parents came from the German state of Baden, perhaps Phorzheim.
This is now pure conjecture.I have no data to support this except for a few notes my father passed on in his estate. There was mention of Elizabeth Arkeit being born in Carlsbad, NJ, but I do not believe that to be so.All census data list her as being born in NY.I believe when Christian came to this country, he went to Carlsbad. What he might have done there I do not know, but that is the only logical explanation. However I've found no documentation to support my theory, so that's all it is.
As for Fredkrec (that’s the actual spelling), I saw a Kings County, NY census that had his name changed to Frederick (Americanization) and working there as an engraver for the government. Can't tell you any more than that at the moment.
My other newly found relative from the Dobra side, Peddy, still lives in Attleboro.Although she has no interest in the Klee side, she is going to visit the Klee cemetery plot and send me the information on the gravestone. The cemetery is either in Plainville or North Attleboro.I'll let you know what I get back from her.
My grandmother, Emma, died in 1975 (Attleboro) and with her went most of the Klee history, so I don't have much; just what I am piecing together through this search
Christian was a jeweler by trade and that is why he moved the family to Attleboro, that being the US jewelry capital.I believe they first moved to Plainville, right next door, then into Attleboro itself. All his children, except for Aunt Minn, were born there.Minnie was born in Providence.
I'm sorry I'm so late with this response, but I only check the boards every once in a while.I will do so more often now.Good luck with your computer; let me know what you may have on Anna that would assist the search, like Port of Entry, Name of ship, etc, etc.So much to find out and so little time to learn.By the way, I am 68, married and live in Williamsburg, VA.
Best,
Klee Chambers Dobra
