Here is my updated story:
My 4th great-grandfather is typically known as Martin Kite of Augusta or Rockingham VA. His grandfather was the first Kite in this VA valley in the 1740's. He is known as John Windle Kite or Wendel Keit or John Windlecoit or John Windlegite or Johannes Wendlekeit depending on the recorder. His lines married into and lived with German immigrants who came from near Frankfort in the mid 1700's.
Rev Paul Henkel (1754-1825), another 4th grandfather, was a very literate man who founded many Lutheran churches and promoted German schools. His family had lots of ministers and doctors. They ran a printing press for sacred and secular books and music in New Market VA. His diaries refer to his visits to Martin Kite. He refers to him as Martin Geit. Given his scholarship, I wonder if Geit would be the most accurate and whether it is German or Dutch.
Windle Kite or Wendel Keit is listed in 1734 tax lists of Philadelphia county. He seems to be the same as the Windle Kite who has a farm along the Shenandoah river and John Windlecoit whose will around 1750 lists a "Dutch" bible. It could Deutsch or Dutch. One family tradition is that one of his near descendants had wooden shoes implying he was Dutch. Another tradition is that they were Dorch Germans.
The Kites were riverboat men and ran mills along the Shenandoah, Ohio and other rivers. I suspect that they were river men along the Rhine in German and the Netherlands (Dutch) and that they helped Quakers from England as they recruited Germans from the Rhine valley for PA in the early 1700's. I have not found Windle Kite on a ship list, but wonder if he was a sailor. I'd like to find out more about ships from Rotterdam, Netherlands.
Please let me know if you have any suggestions or information about a Geit or similar line from the 1700's.
