Tina, Thanks for your last one. All the Barbados Wills and Administrations were published in Sanders in 3 Volumes. As far as I know this only shows abstracts of each will. The line that interests you begins with JOHN KIRTON, Senior, planter of St. Philip Parish, who I believe was the JOHN KIRTON baptized at Burghfield, Berks., England on 25 June, 1609. (IGI) He had arrived in Barbados before 7 Dec., 1648, when he had a son baptized at St. Philip.(Sanders, Baptisms, p536, RL1/22,1) In my earlier transmission I had stated that I thought that this son was probably William, but, in the light of new data just received, I now suspect that John's eldest son was in fact NATHANIEL. The 1680 Census of St. Philip identifies both John and Nathan(iel), but does not identify either of his other sons, William and John. Nathaniel is believed to have married an ALICE LAUGHLAND (or possibly LAUINGTON, dau. of Mr. WILLIAM LAUINGTON of St. John's Parish, Barbados, who also appears in the 1680 Barbados Census) and it is probably this couple's first born son, JOHN KIRTON who was baptized at St. Philip on 3 Jan., 1668, identified as "Son of Nat: Als Laughland Kerton" (Ref.: Sanders Baptisms, p. 536, RL1/22,29) (i.e. "Son of Nathaniel and Alice (Laughland) Kerton or Kirton") Clearly John had been born in 1667, and this is supported by the 1715 Barbados Census which shows him aged 48. In 1686 NATHANIEL KIRTON was the first of his family to die, predeceasing his own father (Sanders, Wills & Administrations, p.206) Will written 1686, NATHANIEL KIRTON, planter of St.Philip....sons: JOHN KIRTON & THOMAS KIRTON....daughters: ALICE KIRTON (named after her mother), SARAH, REBECCA, ELIZABETH, DARQUES (DORCAS ?)....father JOHN KIRTON, Senior. (No mention of his wife, ALICE, who must have predeceased him) In the following year 1687 JOHN KIRTON, SENIOR died:(Sanders, ibid., p.205) Will written 1687: JOHN KIRTON, SENIOR, planter of St. Philip, (Nathaniel is already dead, so is not mentioned)...son WILLIAM...son JOHN...dau.MARY PRESTLY....dau. ELIZA CLARKE. From which I conclude that William is the elder brother of John. NATHANIEL and ALICE KIRTON had children: THOMAS KIRTON, who married a MARY (b. 1672, identified as a widow in the 1715 Census); daus. ALICE; SARAH; REBECCA (who marr. LAWRENCE BOONE in St. Philip, 3 Set., 1699 (ref.: boonefamily.org)); ELIZABETH; DARQUES (DORCAS ?) As already mentioned previously from the 1715 Census JOHN KIRTON, planter of St.Philip, married DOROTHY SISNETT 9 July, 1687 (Sanders, p.536) and had children:NATHAN KIRTON, b. 1688, bap. 2 Sept.,1688,aged 26 in 1715 Census, still alive in 1727); Dr. JOHN KIRTON, bapt. at St.Philip 25 Jan., 1690,m. Ann Caddle, MD at Leyden University, Holland, 1720, died in Barbados 1738;SUZANNA, bapt.8 Oct.,1693, marr. ANDREW HARRISON;ANN(E) KIRTON, b.c.1702, m. RICHARD FIELD(S) 23 Nov.,1722; THOMAS KIRTON, b.1704,alive in 1727; DOROTHY, b.1706; PHILIP, b.1708,still alive in 1727. By the time JOHN KIRTON, husband of Dorothy, planter of St.Philip, died in 1727 (Sanders, RL1/2,430) his will abstract reads: JOHN KIRTON, planter of St.Philip...dau.SUSANNA HARRISON wife of ANDREW HARRISON... dau. ANN FIELD wife of RICHARD FIELD...wife DOROTHY KIRTON...son THOMAS KIRTON. ..son PHILIP KIRTON...son NATHAN KIRTON. See also "CARIBBEANA" by Vere Langford Olivier, who shows a complete pedigree for Dr. John and his descendents. She also mentions Mrs. Vernona Smith for her Barbados pedigrees. Mrs. Smith who lived and worked in England in about 1825 has left a vast MSS which is now housed at the Society of Genealogists in London. She seems to have taken a special interest in the Kirketons / Kyrketons / Kirtons / Kyrtons / Kertons & Keartons. Sincerely, Jonathan Notify Administrator about this message?
