I have heard two different storeys relating to the name change from Kirkley to Kirtley. I don't know what is true if any are but here's what I have heard.

1. That Kirkley was a catholic version of the name and the family changed to Kirtley, when they changed religion or to distinguish themselves from them.

2. That there was a bad Kirkley family in the area and they changed their name to disassociate themselves from that family.

I am more likely to believe the first one as both my Kirtley families changed their names at different times and they came from different areas of Durham. I'm still not that conviced on that reason either.

Abby
