Jonathan Cowherd was a Revolutionary War Soldier and his widow Elizabeth received a pension. [Rev. War Pension Jonathan Coward, widow Elizabeth Cowherd, W8619]. In an affidavit 28 March 1845, Green Co., KY Belfield Henry says Elizabeth Cowhered was a daughter of Thomas Kirtley and they [Jonathan & Elizabeth] lived together as man and wife in VA and then moved to Green Co., KY and he has no doubt that they were lawfully married. There is also an affidavit of the Clerk of Culpeper Co., VA who says the marriage bond of the pensioner and his widow Elizabeth Kirtley was dated 2 April 1777 and signed by Jonathan Cowherd and Thomas Kirtley.
Elizabeth's father Thomas Kirtley Sr. wrote his will 6 Sept. 1798 and it was probated 24 Jan. 1799, Madison Co., VA. He mentions his second wife Dorothy and his children including a daughter Elizabeth Cowherd.
