George Kirkpatrick, born in Iowa 1849.
Seeking information on the origins and family of George Kirkpatrick, born in Iowa 1849.
Very interested in the family and origins of Elizabeth Kirkpatrick (Maiden name unknown - - possibly Dickson), born 1822 in Indiana, married John Kirkpatrick, born 1824 in Illinois.
From the City of Bellevue, Jackson County, Iowa, 1856 Census (State), They had the following children:
Emily Kirkpatrick, born in Iowa 1847
George Kirkpatrick, born in Iowa 1849
William A. Kirkpatrick, born in ???, Illinois 1851 (Apparently the family went back to Illinois for a couple of years because the census says that William was 5 years old when the census was taken and had lived in the state of Iowa for 4 years.)
Jason (?) L. Kirkpatrick, born in Iowa in 1853
In addition, the Census showed that there was a Phillip Barger, born in Iowa, 1849 - 1850, (listed as age 6 in the census) living with the family at the time of the 1856 Census.
Also living with the family in 1856 was a Rebecca Meoriarty (?), age 26; born in Ohio, and who had lived in Iowa 3 years; listed occupation: Servant
The 1860 Census did not find the Kirkpatrick family in Bellevue!
Elizabeth Kirkpatrick had a sister, Delila (Delia?) who married William Penn Barger. The marriage certificate lists her as Delila McGrew when she was married. She was born about 1811 in Kentucky, and died about 1854. (She was the mother of Philip above.) It is unknown if her maiden name was McGrew, or whether she had been married previously.
It is believed that John T. KIRKPATRICK (James Lane, John, James, James, Alexander, Alexander) who was born in Illinois, is probably the oldest son of James Lane Kirkpatrick, although full proof is lacking.
He first appeared in the records on 30 January 1849 when he purchased lots 281 and 305 in Bellevue, Jackson County, Iowa, from John Hutchins for $100. Five months later he sold these same lots to Allen H. Kirkpatrick, probably his brother, for $50. The deed at this time was also signed by Elizabeth, his wife. This is the earliest indication of John's marriage. He appears in the 1856 Iowa State Census where he is listed as age 32, hence he would appear to have been born about 1824 in Illinois. His wife was Elizabeth, whose maiden name is unknown. According to the 1856 census she was born circa 1822 in Indiana. John's occupation in the census is as bartender, an unusual occupation in the family of Methodist Ministers.
Any information for any of the above will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
