Notes for FRANCIS ORRELL:
Ancestry of the Wife of Francis Orrell,
Son of John Orrell, Sr.
By: Reverdy L. Orrell, III
from issue #31
Don't think for one second that I'm going to be so stupid as to put Francis Orrell's wife's maiden name and give out this great information early in this article. You've waited many years to find information on this branch of the Orrell family so you can wait an extra few minutes to discover the good stuff.
Again we are indebted to Mary Louise Donnelly who sent much of the information in this article as well as the previous article.First, let's refresh your memory. Let's go back to Dordon Orrell. Call him what you like; we've seen him referred to as Dordon, Dorden, Dordan, Durdin, Dividan, Durdan to name a few. Remember him? He is located in the 1778 Caroline Co, MD Tax Lists as Dwidan & Dwudan. He was located once in Tuckahoe Hundred and once in Choptank Hundred. Dorden served in the Revolutionary War - Mentioned in MD Calendar of MD State Papers 20. From the "Muster Rolls of the 4th Independent Maryland Company (Talbot County) we learn he served in July 1776 under Capt. Phillip Feddeman, of Caroline County. As a Private, he served between 1 Jan 1782 and 1 Jan 1783 in Company 4, 4th Battalion. Listed in Revolutionary War Records Index #50- Pay Records 1780-1784. He also served 1 Jan 1783 to 15 Nov 1783 Company 4, of the Northern Detachment. This Dordon Orrell is the son of Francis Orrell. Quite a bit of space last issue was devoted to his descendants, especially through his son Edward Orrell, father of Edward V. Orrell.
Somewhere an early marriage record was discovered for Francis Orrell and Rachel Harwood. However it is believe she died early and was not definitely not the mother of Dordon Orrell or Thomas Orrell, two proven sons of Francis Orrell. However it is not apparent that Francis Orrell later married Delilah Kirkham. This is obtained through the will of Delilah Kirkham's mother Africa Kirkham, who was born (are you ready for this) Africa Durdin. (Bingo !) But let's start at the beginning:
William Kirkham (also spelled Kircam, Kercum, Kircum, Kericham) immigrated into Maryland in 1669. William Kirkham married Alice Paxon. William Kirkham wrote his will on 30 Dec 1684 which was probated in Talbot County on 5 November 1681.
He mentions his wife Alice Kircum and son James Kircum. Thus far James Kirkham is the only proven child. James Kirkham was born in Talbot County.
According to the Quaker Records on 6 August 1703 he married Africa Durdin, the daughter of Stephen Durdin. When James Kirkham died in Queen Anne's County in 1724 his wife was Africa Kirkham and his next of kin were given as Mary Lane, (wife of Timothy Lane) and William Kirkham. Africa Kirkham was the administratrix of his estate which amounted to about 37 pounds sterling. Africa Kirkham died in Queen Anne's County by 1758. She wrote her will on 16 May 1751 and it was probated on 6 April 1758. In her will she named her children William Kirkham, James Kirkham, Delilah Orrell, and Rachel Meeds (married John Meeds).
Another son Robert Kirkham was not mentioned in the will as he died in 1749 in Augusta County, Virginia. Francis Orrell was named as her executor. This Francis Orrell is the husband of Delilah Orrell, born Delilah Kirkham.
Turning to the Durdin Family we find the following: James Durdin was transported into Maryland in 1665. He was the father of Stephen Durdin. Stephen Durdin, a Quaker, married first .... and then married secondly Rebecca ..., a widow. Stephen Durdin resided in Talbot County, Maryland on 700 acres of 'John's Neck'. Stephen Durdin wrote his will on 2 January 1709 which was probated on 1 April 1710. He named his wife Rebecca as executrix. His daughter Africa Durdin was from his first marriage. The children from his second marriage were Stephen Durdin, Joseph Durdin, Ledia Durdin, and Rebecca Durdin. All of his children were mentioned in his will as were granddaughter Mary Kirkham, daughter of Africa Durdin. Stephen Durdin desired to be buried at the Quaker burial-ground at Tuckahoe in Talbot County, Maryland.
Mary Louise Donnelly is to be thanked for her outstanding research and contribution to the Orrell Family.
Child of FRANCIS ORRELL and DELILAH KIRKHAM is:

4.MARKUS3 TOLLETT (MARY2 ORRELL, JOHN1) was born Abt. 1730 in Dorchester County, Maryland, and died July 1757.He married ELIZABETH "BETSEY" VINEYARD 1748.
Notes for MARKUS TOLLETT:
William Preston reports that Mark Tallett died cir. 1757 (should it be 1752?) during an Indian Raid on Jackson's River (Kerr's Creek?)( James River?) Near Natural Bridge ( Lexington ) Virginia.
Mark had only one known son named John Tollett that was a Methodist Church Planter in the Country of Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, and Arkansaw Territories. He had one known Daughter Elizabeth.
The Vineyard Families stayed on in this area.. and many other persons were from Pennsylvania at the time, possibly some from Maryland area..
A will record was found at the Maryland State Archives, Wills, Queen Anne Co., 1752, Box 12 Folder 63, Liber 28, Folio 300, Microfilm SR 4422-1 #300.
