Alfred S. Matthews Jr. of Benson, 71, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by the love of his family.
AL was born in Camden, NJ April 1st, 1939. Son of the late Alfred S. Matthews, Sr. and Beatrice Kirkbride.

A devoted husband, father and grandfather.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Barbara Ann Matthews; brother, Ronald Matthews of Haddon Heights NJ; daughter, Sharon Matthews of Graham; sons, Kevin Matthews of Chapel Hill, Kenneth Matthews of Pittsgrove NJ, and Stephen Matthews of Whitemarsh MD, daughter, Kathleen Angelucci of Voorhees NJ; six beautiful grandchildren.

AL was a talented 3rd generation brick layer belonging to Union Local #7. In 1977 he became an employee of USAIR's maintenance depart. in Philadelphia and a member of the machinest union. He moved to Benson, NC in 1997 continuing his career with USAIR of Raleigh-Duham. Al took such good care of his crew they fondly knicknamed him "the Godfather". Al retired in 2002 at age 62. An avid golfer he worked part time at Par Golf in Garner, NC.

When not golfing Al could be found creating beautiful paintings and listening to music-one of his many loves. He was never one to pass up a well enjoyed meal.

The eternal optimist, Al was inspirational to all who knew him and always wore a smile. He filled each day with a passion for living life to the fullest but most of all a great love for his family and friends. He will be surely missed by all.

We would like to thank the following physicians: Dr. Franklin Wefal, Dr. Richard Fines and special thanks to Dr. Ryan Raddin. We would also like to thank Jenny Johnson and Debbie Page.

In lieu of flowers, donations can made to Hospice of Wake County, NC or UNC Cancer Center of NC.
