Joseph Kirk settled in Orange Co in what is now Chatham Co. near the town of
Haywood.Joseph’s land was in the fork of the Haw and Deep Rivers The survey on this
was in 1760 and deeded in 1761. Joseph must have arrived there in the latter part of the
1750’s, because the survey description reads “in the fork of the Haw and Deep Rivers,
which includes the plantation were Kirk now lives.”

In the early 1760’s there was a lot of road building activity going on in this area.
There were a lot ofcourt records that were appointing the residents in this area different
road building tasks. Some were appointed to lay-out the roads , others were to oversee the
building , but all were requiredto work on the roads.

In 1771 Chatham Co. wasformed from Orange Co. . In 1768 Joseph signed a petition
requesting a new County be formed. I like to believe that Joseph drew up this petition
because his name was the first name to sign .

Lewis Kirk had a son namedParham. John 's first two sons were named Parham and
Lewis.Parham was most likely born in Chatham Co. Lewis might have been born in

It’s hard to establish the exact date that Joseph died, but I have reason to believe that it
was a short time before John left for Montgomery Co.in 1786.

Lewis Kirk left for Halifax Co. in 1764 when he was 20 years old. There were no other
Kirks in Halifax Co. at this time.Lewis bought 220acres of land in Halifax Co. in Jan 1764.
Lewis sold this land Jan 1768.On this sale of land Sarah relinquished her right of dowry.
This was the only land Lewis ever owned in Halifax Co. Lewis and Sarah returned so
Orange Co. about 1771.Lewis remained in OrangeCo. the rest of his life. Lewis and his
sons owned several hundred acres of land in Orange Co. mostly in the extreme SW corner of the
present day Orange county.

Why did Lewis Kirk at the age of 20 leave his family in Orange Co. and go to Halifax?
I think I know the reason.I believe Lewis was already acquainted with a young ladyby
the nameof Sarah Parham. The Parhams were well established in Halifax Co. at this
time. One of the Parham families was William and Rebecca.Lewis and Sarah had
children named William, Rebecca and Parham.

Before Lewis left Halifax, his brother Isaac came to Halifax Co., in 1770 and bought
land.Isaac lived in Halifax Co. until his death in Feb 1800.Isaac became a wealthy
cotton planter. Tax records show Isaac owned stud horses in the latter 1780’s.

StephenKirk had less of a paper trail then his brother did, but there were enough records
toaffirm that he was around Orange Co. in the same time period. Stephen gave two of
his sons, Jesse and Thomas, deeds of gift in Oct 1783. Also Stephenhad court records of
serving on jury duty and road building duty in the area were Lewis lived. There wasn’t a
lot of land transactions like his brothers had. This leads me to believe thathe wasn’t a
farmer, but a merchant or minister.

to read , but in essence this is what it stated. “Lewis Kirk and Col Clark were very

believe to embrace the cape means that he became a minister.
