Hi.Are you one of John's descendants?I've been interested in locating some of them.John Kirk was one of at least four children. His father was called James. His mother's name is unknown. Some derivative records in the US think they know but are in error due to a confusion between this line and one from Virginia back in the 1920s.His known brothers were James, Jr., who remained in Northern Ireland as far as we know, Robert and Mathew.Robert and Mathew were younger.John, Robert and Mathew immigrated in 1772-1773 from near Ballymoney, Co Antrim, Northern Ireland. They were probably with the group of protestants brought over by the Rev. William Martin on five ships.John was the only one old enough to get land in his own name. There is a land grant record from the Colonial Council in Charles' Town (Charleston). The passenger lists don't exist. It looks as if they were probably on board the Lord Dunluce, although some sources would assign them to the James and Mary.John was born in 1751 and Mathew in 1760.We don't know about Robert for sure. Some sources place him between John and Mathew.Others seem to imply he was the youngest. The three originally settled in Lancaster Co., SC.Then John was awarded land in Tennessee for his military service in the revolution (where he was wounded)and moved to Tennessee with some of his wife's family. She was Mary Eleanor Montgomery, daughter of Hugh Montgmery and Jane Cunningham. She was probably born in 1755 and died sometime after 1836 in Henderson Co., Tennessee, where most of her children had gone.Left John and moved west with her married daughter Eleanor Killough and her husband and there is no evidence that she ever went back. There is a record that John visited her once there. There is a good deal known about the descendants of Mathew, of whom I am one.One thing to be careful when looking for John's descendants is a tendency of various groups to appropriate John, Jr., into their line.As far as I can tell, he was only married to Mary (Polly) Davidson. He was not, I think, the father of John Cousar Kirk.Nor was he involved with a set from Virginia that lived in Knox Co., TN.The problem is that there were several John Kirk's in the Carolinas and in Tennesse and I think they tend to get jumbled.I hope this helps.Kathy Kirk, Birmingham, AL
