Laura, Thank you for responding. I will have to differ with you about Elisha's history. I just discovered his military records at the IL State Archives website. He enlisted with Co. I, 120th U.S. infantry. He was living in Johnson Co., IL, married and a farmer. His records stated he was 27 years old and born in Murray (Maury)Co., TN. He enlisted August 13, 1862, Vienna, Johnson Co., IL for 3 years. He mustered in October 29, 1862, Camp Butler (Sprinfield)IL. He mustered out September 10, 1865, Memphis. It was noted that he was a POW captured at Ripley, MS, on June 11, 1864. I checked with Soldier & Sailors website and found that he was a POW at Andersonville, GA. In 1875, Charles Quest and wife,Martha, widow of Elisha filed for a widow's pension for her. They were living in Shelby Co., IL, near Windsor, which is just 10 miles from where I live. The 1870 census shows that Charles & Martha had 4 children in the home and all were using the Quest name. Kelly age 10, Monroe age 9, Mary age 3 and John age 1. Kelly & Monroe (males) must be Elisha's sons because they both would have been born before the war & Elisha & Martha were married in 1859. The boys must have taken the Quest name after Elisha died. As for Martha's place of birth, census records show IL, Ohio and TN. So, it's anybodys guess as to where she was born. There were several Kirk people living in Effingham Co., IL in 1870, This is the country where Martha married Charles Quest. Effingham is about 40 miles from my home. I found all of this information after posting my message to you. Again, I thank you for responding. Pat Notify Administrator about this message?
