I have a copy of Wednesday, August 1, 1973 McCurtain Gazette, featuring Wood Kirk, "Host with the Most".Following are facts from that article:
He was born James Wood Kirk, Jr. in Blufftaon, S. C. on Feb. 14, 1852.His father was Dr. James Wood Kirk, Sr. of that town, a physician and minister, his mother was Gabrella Garth Kirk of the Charlottesville, Va. Garths.
At 17 he was enrolled in the University of Virgina, dropping out in 1871 at age of 19.He set out for the Choctaw Nation (now McCurtain County), probably following his cousin, Louis Teel.In 1878 he married Mary Jane Garvin, a daughter of the former chief, thereby becoming an intermarried citizen of the Choctaw Nation. He could then take land and become a rancher.Mary Jane died in 1880; in 1882 he married Sarah McClure of the Lukfata McClures. They had two children, Garella Garth Kirk (died at age of ten) and James Wood Kirk III (died at age of 24).Sarah died March 15, 1911.In 1913 Wood married Etta Brown. He died April 13, 1916, she lived many years in Little Rock, Arkansas.Wood was a very rich man.The article has pictures of Wood and Sarah and the Teels.
I would be happy to send this article to anyone who asks.
