spelling of last name

Hello all Kirchgessner's!

I have this same last name, although I only spell it with one 's' instead of two. There are a fairly large group of Kirchgesner's in central Illinois. I am fairly sure the two spelling are related, and have heard an interesting story about why one 's' was taken off. This story involves the long last name with a small billboard or sign with room enough for 11 characters. Has anyone heard of this story, or know anything similar?

If you read this and know this information, please contact me at:

Thanks,
- Andrew Kirchgesner
