Irish Spellings of Kinsella
Cousins, You may want to see my website which includes spellings of the Kinsella surname from the 1600's and earlier. My name derives from the same root surname as Kinsella, but our family came over to America before the "Kinsella" spelling had evolved in Ireland. My earliest American ancestor (1693) first spelled his name Kinselloe, then Kinshello. We accent the first syllable, as is done still in Ireland.
As near as I can tell our family is the earliest branch of the Kinsella (Cheinnsellaig) to come to America. The name was spelled 15 ways in a 35 year period. The English clerks of Virginia just couldn't figure an Irish Gaelic name out!
The list of spelling variations may be helpful if you are doing 17th century research.
