William Kinney of Rowan/Davidson Co, NC
Posted by: Frances Cullom Harper (ID *****6699) Date: March 20, 2011 at 07:22:53

For anyone who wants a solid record to help prove when William Kinney died, this deed proves he was still alive in 1824. The phrase "it being an original grant to the *said* Wm Kinney" indicates it was the same William Kinney of this deed who was granted the land. You can see and print the entire deed by going to the Davidson Co Register of Deeds webpage and entering the deed book and page. (You cannot search the older deeds by name.)

This gives us proof that William Kinney died in Davidson Co after 13 Nov 1824.

Davidson Co DB 1 p 313

For anyone who wants to find the tombstone for William Kinney and Sallie Parks: From Lexington, go S on Hwy 8/Cotton Grove Rd. Cross over the I-85 bridge and continue just past the Quality Inn entrance to the next road to the left, Fuller Rd. Go about .3 mile and take a left on Fairfax Rd. Go about .2 miles past the rear of the Quality Inn to a dirt road on the left that goes back into the woods. Go about 200 feet and the stones will be on your right in the woods overlooking I-85. This is NOT an original tombstone but a memorial erected in the 1940's. There is only one stone with William Kinney on one side and Sallie Parks on the other side. So the birth date inscribed as 1733 in Scotland was only an educated guess. Even the name of his wife is not certain because it too was an educated guess. There is only one stone with William Kinney on one side and Sallie Parks on the other side. This is not even the original location of the graves as the graves had to be moved when I-85 was constructed.

There are a number of slate markers with no inscription that were moved along with the other graves. There are only two original inscribed stones:

Henry C.
son of
J. & B. Cox
Feb. 8, 1829
Feb 18, 1829

Wife of
John Cox
Aug 18, 1810,
July 28, 1855,
Aged 44 y'rs
11 m's 18 d's
(The math doesn't work for the age, but this is what's inscribed on the stone.)

The Cabin Creek land above could not have been the land where the graves were located. Cabin Creek is much farther south just below Lick Creek in Jackson Hill. This is the area later associated with Rev Alfred Kinney, son of Christian Kinney.
