Hello to all the members of the Kingsley family! I am doing research for the church I attend, Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral (Episcopal), in Kansas City, Missouri. While the main focus of my research are the memorials in the Nave, including the stained glass windows, I am also preparing a history of the parish and the church buildings for the small book I am writing for the use of the congregation. (It will not be published commercially.) For that section of the book, I am researching the life of Robert Nelson Horatio Spencer (1877-1961), who was Rector of our parish from 1917 until 1930, when he became the Bishop of our Diocese, which is the Diocese of West Missouri. Bishop Spencer was born and raised in Tunnel, New York, which is part of the Township of Colesville. There was a cheese factory in Tunnel, and Robert's father raised dairy cows and sold his milk to this cheese factory. When he was 15, and had lost his mother to cancer and his father had fallen apart and deserted him, Robert was taken in by the kindly owner of the cheese factory, and was trained to be his assistant. Bishop Spencer's biography names the owner of the cheese factory as "Charles Kingsley". We are also told that his wife's name was Edith. The time frame that this occurred would have been 1892 or 1893. The biography also mentions that Charles and Edith were soon to have their first child. I do not know if Bishop Spencer, who was recalling his life almost at the end (1957), was absolutely correct on the given names of these two Kingsleys -- and I say that because I cannot find any evidence of a Charles Kingsley married to an Edith in New York State in the Federal Census Reports for 1880, 1900 or 1910. Can anyone help me? Do you know if one of your ancestors owned a cheese factory in Tunnel, New York, not far from Colesville and Binghamton, NY, around 1890? I am eager to have Mr. Kingsley's birth and death years for the story, but I also want to use the correct first name for him! If you have information for me, please feel free to contact me directly at RandalJLoy@gmail.com. Thank you so much for your assistance! Randal J. Loy Notify Administrator about this message?
