In Bradford, McKean Co., PA, I found some information about the "First Families of the Tuna Valley." Some of the first comers to this area were Ruby Newell and husband Daniel Kingsbury. Daniel bought out the U.S. Land Company Nov. 20, 1850. His purchase was about 50,000 acres, including a great part of McKean Co. and including the township of Bradford. Daniel Kingsbury conveyed to his brother-in-law, Artemus Newell of Massachusetts, a large part of his property, and employed his young nephew, Augustus William Newell (son of Artemus) as his right-hand man, surveyor, coal or mineral expert. This goes on to tell much more about the Newell family that got into the oil business and many other ventures.
