About the shooting of Kimmel and Stiles by Guest... Two accounts of the 1856 incident are in the "History of Duncanville, Texas" (1976, Duncanville Historical Committee). But, the shooting of Philip Kimmel & William Stiles most likely occurred in Ellis County, Texas where Philip Kimmel and Joseph "Calvin" Guest were ranchers with families in the "Chambers Creek" district at the time. Philip Kimmel's wife Susan Henderson and Calvin Guest's wife Rebecca Henderson were daughters of James Henderson. William Stiles, of Red River County, had some relationship (nephew?) to Elizabeth Stiles, who was James Henderson's third wife. Got that? It was a family dispute that turned tragic and there appears to have been no legal action taken as a result. John Treese (Trees) had been Philip Kimmel's guardian, and Philip Kimmel's sister Anna Minerva married Crawford Trees, so that's how Kimmel and Stiles ended up buried in the Trees family cemetery. Guest continued to raise his family, Kimmel's widow remarried and I don't know what happened to Stile's wife and kids. For more information you could check microfilmed copies of 1856 Dallas or Fort Worth newspapers to see if the story was reported. Sometimes sensational stories get circulated. Or, see if it got recorded in court records at Waxahachie, Texas. Notify Administrator about this message?
