Could you tell where this story is written down - is it in Mason County records?
I've not encountered the story, but am interested in your reference to ELIJAH KIMBERLING. As I recall, there are traces of three Elijah Kimberlings in 19th century Mason County records. (One of them married Louisa Reynolds in 1828 and fathered Lawrence G. Kimberling, born Christmas day 1835; that Elijah was my ggg grandfather.)
Your reference to Elijah the sheriff as early as 1840's suggests a source of information about him - namely, records of the Mason County Sheriff's Office. Has someone seen these how far back Elijah's signature as sheriff goes? (I doubt that Elijah the sheriff was Louisa's husband - but - who knows?)
