Hi Betsy,
There seemed to be a tadition in the Kilvert family in Manchester, UK, in the 1800's and early 1900's to use the mothers maiden name for one of the sons middle name.
Ralph Ratcliffe Kilvert got his name from grandmother Sarah Ratcliffe.
John Ruscoe Kilvert got his name from his grandmother(mother) Catherine Ruscoe.
Harry Vernon Kilvert got his name from his grandmother Sarah Vernon.
Ralph Blomiley Kilvert got his name from hisgrandmother Ann Blomiley.
Likewise the Kilvert daughters, after changing there surname at marriage christened their sons with a Kilvert middlename.
In the USA the first Kilvert immigrants were Thomas and Ellen Kilvert(nee Whalley). A son was christened Samuel Whalley Kilvert. SWK also named his son Samuel Whalley Kilvert.
Also in this Branch of the Kilvert family are:-
-Walter Dun Kilvert, named after his mother, Elizabath Dun's father.
-His daughter Helen married Eugene Parmer and they had a child Paul Kilvert Parmer.
-Mary Albertson Kilvert was named after her grandmother Mary Albertson.
-Jean Dun Kilvert was named after her grandmother Elizabeth Dun.
-Priscilla Kilvert married Charles Gifford and named their eldest son Kilvert Dun Gifford.
-Madeleine married Garrett Dunn Pagon and named their daughter Madelaine Kilvert Pagon.
So I have come to the conclusion that if someone has "Kilvert" as their middlename, there is a very good chance that the mothers or grandmothers maiden name was Kilvert.
Cheers for now.Bill.
