The McConnells in Kentucky are difficult to sort out.Mary Piatt wrote a book about Kentucky McConnells that clarifies some of the confusion. She examined lots of court records and other legal documents.
The Alexander McConnell (abt. 1740-1820) who married Hannah Killough, is believe by Mary Piatt to be the son of Francis McConnell (1714-1769) who lived in Fannett Twp, Franklin Co., PA.This is proven by Mary Piatt in her book about Kentucky McConnells with reference to a court case in Cumberland County, PA and several sources including a Fayette County, KY deed where Alexander McConnell and Hannah, his wife, transferred property to his brother James McConnell, June 1789.The reference is to Burnt Records, v. 3, p. 148.James McConnell, the brother and purchaser of the property, was a famous preacher, another son of Francis McConnell.Alexander married Hannah in Mercersburg 14 March 1771.Another brother, John, moved with many of the Killoughs to Ross County, OH.This Alexander McConnell inherited land from his brother Francis McConnell, who was among the first people in Kentucky but who was killed by Indians when he ventured outside Fort Harrod on April 29, 1777.This Alexander McConnell was famous because he was captured by Indians and he escaped. He died in Scott County, KY.
The Alexander McConnell (1758-1821) who married Rebecca Thompson was the son of Captain William McConnell (1725-1770) in Peters Twp, Franklin Co., PA.He was the cousin of the Alexander McConnell who married Hannah Killough.Note he was about 18 years younger that the Alexander McConnell above. He moved to Butler County, Ohio and later Montgomery County, OH where he died in 1821.
