Killion/Killian
A couple of years ago I stumbled on a Killion/Killian Genealogy site. I had no idea that this family had such a well organized group of researchers and that the family history had been so carefully and accurately recorded. By connecting with some of my distant cousins that I didn't even know existed, I was able to trace my lineage back to Pioneer Andreas Killian, my 6th Great Grandfather. It was really fun and very interesting, but their is one question that I have not been able to resolve, and wonder if anyone knows the answer to. My family tree suggest that my 3rd Great Grandfather, Frederick M. Killion, was born in 1795 in Lincoln County NC and died July 14th 1859 in Daviess County IN. His father, Mathias Killian Sr was born in North Carolina in 1749 and died in 1830 in Daviess Co. IN. I assume that they arrived in Indiana in either 1819 or 1820 because my 2nd Great Grandfather Alexander Valentine Killion Sr. was born September 9th 1819 in Ohio. It was originally thought that he was born in North Carolina, but new information I received suggests he was born on the families migration from North Carolina to Indiana. My question is that Mathias Killian Sr. and the Killian's before him spelled their names with an "A" and his son Frederick M. Killion and the Killion's after him spelled their names with an "O". Does anyone know the story of why Frederick M. Killion changed the family surname from Killian to Killion? Was it just a typo in some courthouse record in Indiana or was their a reason? I was told the Daviess County, Indiana courthouse burned to the ground around 1920 and all records were lost. I would be interested in any input anyone has on this subject!
