Hi Patricia,

interesting that Arthur went from being an artist to an attorney
let me know if you need earlier census for Arthur - he is in 1880 and listed as a lawyer - I went back and checked I got it right for the artist and that is what it says ? I wonder if it is supposed to say attorney, pictures ?
I see in 1920 both Helen and Arthur are listed as divorced
1920DIAMOND VALLEY, EUREKA, CA
ROMANO
Albino J., age 20, tram operatior, born NE parents born Italy
Unice F., age 20, wife, born CA father born MA mother born NY
1930OAKLAND, ALAMEDA, CA
ROMANO
Alvin J., age 31, salesman, automobiles, born NE parents born Italy
Eunice F., age 31, wife, born CA father born MA mother born NY
Ruth H., age 9, daughter
Alvin J., age 6, son
Arthur F., age 4, son
all children show father born NE mother born CA
I'm still trying to find any of them in 1940
There is a birth for Arthur Franklin Romano March 12, 1926 Alameda, CA
mother's maiden name Kilgore
have not found birth for son Alvin but there is a WW11 Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard casualties 1941-1945 database which shows
Alvin John Romano
Country- USA
Ensign, USNR
Relative name: Mrs. Nancy Mecklenburg, mother
1642 W. 38th Place, Los Angeles
he was killed in action
*** it does not give the date of his death or place
and I wonder why his mother is listed as Nancy, not Eunice
there is a birth for Ruth H. Romano July 14, 1920 Alameda, mother maiden
name Kilgore
I also found a death for a Nancy K. Mecklenburg born Feb. 26, 1895 died Nov. 8, 1980 Los Angeles
It shows her father's surname KILGORE mother's surname SEALEY
so for some reason Eunice Florence became Nancy K.
There is a Nancy K. Mecklenburg in several CA voters lists - with a husband named Henry J.
There is a death for a Henry J. Mecklenburg Jan. 8, 1956 Los Angeles, born Dec. 10, 1896 NY
Other than the death for her as Nancy Mecklenburg I find no other records with that name - and I see her husband Henry was in NY in 1940 census - house officer, hotel, says he is married but no wife with him - of course that is if he is the right fellow - right age and place, but this fellow shows a son agenamed AYCOCK Robert F., age 5 months born NY
there is a1942 - WW11 draft registration card for Henry Jacob Mecklenburg born Dec. 10, 1896, showing he is employed at the Hotel Lexington in NY
this is the same birth date as the Henry Jacob who died in California in 1956
and the fellow in 1940 census worked in a hotel
I next looked for a Nancy or Eunice VANCOURT
and found some passenger lists
Aug. 2, 1939 left Gothenburg, arrived NY Aug. 11, 1939 , ship name KUNGSHOLM
VAN COURT
Nancy, age 44, born Woodland, California Feb. 26, 1895 , address in US is
89 - 11, 34th Ave. Jackson Heights, NY
Jan 27, 1933 departure from San Francisco California going to Honolulu, Hawaii, arriving Feb. 2, 1933
VAN COURT
Nancy, age 37
travelling first class
that is all the info it gives and she seems to be travelling alone, at least not with anyone of same surname
so this is all a little difficult to figure out - mainly where are all the children of Eunice in 1940? and where is she?
why did she change her name to Nancy ?
I just had a thought - since she changed her name to Nancy - maybe she changed the surname too without marrying a VANCOURT- so I looked for the kids under that name and
there is an Arthur F. Vancourt, birthdate March 12, 1926 - who is residing in Sacramento in 1989
that birthday is the same as Arthur Romano
there is a marriage for an Arthur F. Vancourt age 43, to Marcia G. Hunterage 29 - married July 11, 1969 - marriage place Orange Co. CA
he was born about 1926, she born about 1940
there is also a divorce for an Arthur F. Vancourt and Marion C. Jensen -divorce date jan. 1966 Los Angeles City
Arthur Franklin Vancourt born March 12, 1926 died Aug. 26, 2011 Chico, Butte, California
So at least one child took on the name Vancourt
we know Alvin did not or at least his death record did not show that name, but rather his birth name of ROMANO
Oh my gosh, I found them - they are indexed as DAN COURT but will write names as they should be
1940NEW YORK, QUEENS, NEW YORK
89-11 -34TH AVE.
VAN COURT
Nancy, age 41, widow, silhouette artist, own studio, born California
Ruth, age 19, daughter, dressmaker, retail dress shop, born California
Alvin J., age 16, son, born California
Arthur F., age 14, son born California
all living in same place in 1935
the address is the same as in the passenger list above
So either she had married a Van Court man and he died or she changed her name and those of the children too for some reason and left CA for NY
she likely met Henry in NY and they later went back to California
she must have married him between 1940 and 1945 per the death of son Alvin in WW11
I just found another mention for Alvin J. Romano -which shows an entry for find a grave which shows Ens. Alvin J. Romano died April 17, 1945
and it says he entered service from NY, burial Honolulu , Hawaii
and a WW2 and Korean Conflict veterans interred overseas database shows
Alvin J. Romanodied April 17, 1943 - last known status : missing
so that sounds like they made a guess at the death date
monument in Honolulu
also note the two different years shown in those database entries
there is another entry for US rosters of Ww 2 death 1939-1945 which shows
Ens Alvin J. Romanobut no dates given
I hope this helps a bit.
