Kilduff Surname Origin ....THE TRUTH...IT IS NOT IRISH
The surname Kilduff does NOT have its origins in Co.Galway as many think. The name Kilduff..Gealic Form Mac Goilla Dubh. Which directly comes from the ancient Dalradian in Scotland. Where our ancesters were seated Kings of Perthshire, as mentioned in The Doomsday book.
Our name is directly linked to MACDUFF, which also has the same gaelic meaning ` son of the black hair ` and Crest bearing the family motto which is `GOD ASSISTS`.
Ancient historical records state( took a lot of digging as many were destroyed by fire or age or the English over time ) that identical twin brothers were born to the King of Perthshire, strangely enough both were allowed to live and fought for the crown. The winner kept the crownthe gealic name was MacGiolladubh was split into two........ The victorius brother was given the name MacDuff who comtinued to reign as Kings in Scotland. The looser the name Kilduff.
The brother bore the name Kilduff stayed in lower Perthshire for a time ( Kilduff tower a square red brick fortress with 4 towers at each point long since destroyed ) he and his kinsmen who fought with him were given lands in Ireland in return for the promise that they would never challenge the crown again.
There is no tartan for Kilduff in Scotland the victorious brother refused to honour his brother in this way nor has a true Tartan in Ireland.
We do however have the right to wear the MacDuff Tartan
