John KILBY (though abstracted as KILVY in one record by Scottish surveyor John Hume)was granted land by the Northern Neck Proprietors in 1747.That land is now known as "La Grange" and is located on the Culpeper/Madison county border of Virginia, at the western tip of Culpeper County in an area generally known as the Gourdvine Neck.Near where the three counties of Culpeper, Madison and Rappahannock counties all meet. After a series of land transfers, much of it ended up in the hands of Joel Brown, father of Armistead Brown whose family cemetery is on the property.Records for the property are found in both counties (Culpeper and Madison) and an earlier deed mentions the road as "The Road to Madison Court House" as one of the boundaries.
