Hi Geneva! Here's what I have on Purley Kight. I also have much info on his children, grand & great grandchildren, but I'm not sure where you fit in? I'd really appreciate if you'd bring me up to date on your line. Either here or email me at meranda@mail2.gcnet.net

sincerely
Deb Kight

A family story tells that his                             older sister somehow cheated him out of his right to the family farm. It is                             said that he went to court to get it back, but failed. Purley & LaVerna                             were married 2/18/1893. She is the daughter of Joseph & Angeline                             (Owens) Butler of Owens Co. IN.

*(5) John Kight b. 6/16/1784 Allegany Co.. MD; d. 4/30/1872 Scotland Co. MO; m. 5/14/1805        at Chillicothe OH to Anne Catherine (Gundy) b. 2/4/1785 PA; d. 11/23/1868 Scotland               Co. MO; daughter of Jacob Gundy Sr. (Revolutionary War Soldier, b.10/13/1765;
       d. 9/24/1845; m. 1784; son of Joseph Van Gundy, Rev. War Soldier, b. ca. 1732; m.               1784 to Magdalena        (Haldeman) b. 1738; d. 11/20/1810) & Katherine Maria (Maury)               (b.11/10/1762; d. 9/20/1810;) The Gundy's were believed to be from Switzerland. The        Haldeman/Halderman name is Swiss. It is possible to join the Daughters of the                      American Revolution "DAR" on Jacob Gundy's line by proving your connection back to               Catherine (Gundy) as Rowena (Gundy) DeWitz, national number, 497486, has done.
              There is little to no proof that this John Kight is any relation to Henry & Rachel               Kight.        Only hearsay and a few family stories can back this up. Earlier family historians               have included him from the following circumstantial evidence, which taken together, is               quite convincing. One very old woman in Cumberland MD, told Pat DeWitz that she               could remember her mother mentioning that "Minnie Kight" had gone to Missouri. Levi               Chattin asked her mother if she had ever heard that name and she replied, "why yes, that               was the nickname of old John Kight." Also, the Acton family is found in the Ohio area               where John first settled and a comparison of the names of Henry & Rachel's children               with those of John & Catherine find the names to be similar. There is no mention of               John in amy family bible record belonging to descendants of Henry & Rachel. This is               argued that these bibles belonged to grandchildren of Henry who were too young to ever               have heard of John, who must have left home at a young age.
              During the War of 1812, John Kight served in Captain Christopher Wood's               Company, Ohio Mounted. in Col. O'Neil's Regiment. John enlisted 9/14/1812; was               discharged 10/10/1812; in another place in his records, it is said he was discharged in               December, 1812 at Columbus, OH. John received Bounty Land Warrant #16584-80-55.        He made a declaration of service for pension on 4/8/1871 at 87 years of age while living               at Alpine, Washington Twp., Wapello Co., IA. Pension application was rejected                      because of insufficient service on 3/14/1872. Witnesses to John Kight's signature and               testators to his character were William Moore and Isaac Dopp.
              John and Catherine lived for a time in Franklin Co. OH. In 1828 or 1829, they               moved, along with the Gundys to Vermilion Co. IL, settling on the north branch of the               Vermilion River at Myer's Mill, later called Myersville. This town is no longer in               existence. When the railroad went through that part of Vermilion Co., the people of               Myersville moved to Bismarck, a station on the railroad. In 1833, John & Catherine sold               their land to Catherine's brother, Joseph Gundy, for $75. It isn't known where they lived               for the next few years, but in 1845, they settled in Scotland Co.. MO. near Crawford               Station in the northwestern part of the county. They are buried on their farm, later               owned by their nephew Thomas Touse Gundy, 3-31/2 miles Northwest of the Crawford               Station, Missouri.
                     The names of the children of John and Catherine (Gundy) Kight are found in the                      probate of the estate of Thomas Gundy of Vermilion Co., ILL, October 1892. Some of                      the birth dates can be found on tombstones in the Friendship Cemetery in Crawford                      MO.

(38)       10. Joshua Kight b. 8/15/1828 IN; d. 5/2/1920 St. Louis, MO; m. 8/9/1850 Memphis                      Co. MO to Orrill Mary (Bucklin) b. 12/4/1830 OH; d. 4/7/1901; both buried in                      Friendship Cemetery, north of Crawford Station, Scotland Co.. MO; Joshua                      joined the army during the Civil War, as did his brother, James. But unlike                      James, Joshua fought        on the South's side. At the end of the war, the family was                      reunited, except for Joshua, who had been unable to get transportation home. At                      last, the family received a letter saying that he was coming up the Mississippi                      River by steamboat and would arrive at Quincy IL, on a certain day. James drove a               team and wagon to the shore opposite Quincy, and after a lengthy wait, Joshua                      was rowed across the river to the spot where James was waiting. The brothers                      embraced and sobbed in each other's arms. The beginning of the trip was almost                      incoherent with the quick telling of the family news and the accounts of the battles               they had been in. But, when about half way home, Joshua let it be known that he                      still sympathized with the South. James stopped the horses and told Joshua to get                      out and walk. Joshua        had more than 20 miles to go, so it was quite late that night                      when he was finally reunited with the remainder of the family. The two men were               enemies for much of the remainder of their lives, but finally became friends when                      they were quite old men.
