All Kiernans came from Ireland originally and were often Mc Kiernan originally. They were mostly from Leitrim and Cavan where there are many of them still. In the parish of Aughavas in Leitrim there were so many Kiernans they had `nicknames` to identify each family. We were the `fadgies` from the Irish `fada` which means tall. It is likely that your ancestor came from Leitrim or Cavan. sincerely Patricia Kiernan
