Suggest you check Christian Kiefer Jr, in the 1860 census of New Bremen, Lewis, NY. He has a son listed as Joseph G. that is just the right age for Joseph J(ohn).

Christian's wife was Magdalena Steiner, married 1/18/1849 in Lewis County. His parents were Christian & Catherine Hirschy.

Christian (Sr) and Catherine are indexed in Lewis County in 1870, but Junior is not (though they may be listed).
