Capt. John KIDDER, b1831 Bath, ENGLAND - Master Mariner

Hello. I have found out that there was a Master Mariner in England in 1860's to 1880's?, who was called, Capt. John KIDDER. One record has him being born in Bath in 1831; I am assuming this means Bath, ENGLAND.

In 1870, he was the Ship's Captain on a ship heading from London to Sydney, Australia.

I was wondering if anyone had ever come across KIDDER families living in Bath ! I believe that is Bath, Somerset, England - southwest of London !

For a brief moment, my imagination went wild and I thought maybe "John" KIDDER, b1835 in or near Amity, Maine, had become a Master Mariner ! And, perhaps a Ship's Captain - sailing the world over !

But, after all is read, we still don't know anymore about Jonathan KIDDER's profession ! All the KIDDER book says is that "he loved the sea and died at sea in 1887."

I'm told that, if he was a Mariner, he probably worked on ships out of Maine ports ! Even after he moved his family to New Brunswick in the 1870's !

Another reason I thought Capt. KIDDER might be a connection is that I have always been curious why Jonathan's oldest son decided to migrate to the Hawaiian Islands ! Those islands were only being inhabited by English-speaking people in the early 1800's, and Charles moved there around 1882 ! Someone in Maine or visiting Maine had to have told him about "Hawaii."

And, I still wonder whether Jonathan was either on his way to Honolulu, or on his way back, when he died ! His son had just married and had his child there !
