I heard a wonderful little story that you might enjoy about when Virgil & Jewel got married, as told by their grandson, Roy Claxon:
"Virgil had been courting Jewell Fossit for a couple of years. He got a job making 75cents a day and saved up about thirty dollars. He went to Jewell's daddy to ask for her hand. He said "no." They reconed that he wanted her to stay there and cook and clean. So late that night he came over and she threw down two suitcases to him, then shinnied down a poplar tree. They walked a long way, and he had arranged with some neighbors to hide them for the night. The next day they went on to Portsmouth and got married. Old man Fossitt went hunting for them, but he didn't know his way around Portsmouth, so he gave up the hunt."
Virgil was my Grandpa's brother.
