Hi Stewart, In the case of *my* Keziah/Cashia/Kizzia family (not saying this is true of ALL those who carry the surname) the SURNAME originated in their Native language, which was Skarure, the language of the Tuscarora Indians. My Cashia ancestors came out of the Albermarle area of North Carolina. The name happened coincidentally to resemble the name of Job's daughter as recorded in Genesis. Our name was orginally recorded as Cashia, spelled many different ways but pronounced Kesh-SHY-uh. In the area today it is pronounced as Kesh-eye. The root word in Skarure for the verb 'to hear' is - Eh'k-heh-syeah or Kuh-syeah, pronounced Keh-shy-uh or Keh-shy-yeh, though in some dictionaries a 'w' is substituted for the middle 'K'. The name 'Cashia' probably refered to hearing or listening. It may have originally meant 'The One Who Listens', or maybe conversely 'The Deaf One'. All we know is that my 4th G-Grandfather and several siblings adopted the name of their father as a surname and it's been with us ever since. Cheers and Happy Hunting! Deborah
