I have run into a mystery concerning my great grandfather John Key. His father was Burley Key born in Carlton Nottingham about 1839, died 1903. Burley's parents were William Key and Hannah ?. Burley's wife was Mary (possibly Rodger or Rodgers), born in Radcliffe Lancashire around 1845. Burley and Mary had 8 children. William (1870), James (1873), John (1875), Eliza (1878), Mary (1880), Hannah 1885), Rodger Barker (1888), Frank (1892). They lived in Arden Cottage, Bredbury, near Stockport Cheshire. In 1896 John Married Lizzie Bradshaw. They had two children - Maggie (1898) and Eliza Ellen (1900). Eliza Ellen was my grandmother. By the time of the 1901 census, Maggie was living with the Key family in Stockport; Eliza was with the Bradshaw family in Castle Gresley Leicestershire. Lizzie was away in Stockport working in service. Lizzie married again in about 1907 (William Dennis in Measham Leicestershire). By 1911 she has a son with William and her two daughters from her previous marriage all living together in Measham. There is no sign of John Key in either the 1901 or 1911 census. He is not mentioned in Burley's will. He seems to have been completely ostracized. My grandmother would never talk about him. I assumed he had died - but he's not in the death records and a recently found relative remembers him from the 1920s. Also, we have documents that suggest he was at my grandmother's wedding in 1923. So - he did something very bad and disappeared for over 20 years. There must be a divorce if Lizzie remarried. If he were in prison, he should still be in the census records. Perhaps he changed his name. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Chris Allen - Melbourne Australia Notify Administrator about this message?
