Kewley DNA Isle of Man
Hello,
My name is James Edward Kewley I was one of the 1st contributors to this site back in Feb 1998. Since then there has been great discussion regarding our ancestors on this site. I am writing today to any male Kewley to consider having their DNA tested at http://www.familytreedna.com/default.aspxhttp://www.familytreedna.com/default.aspx to see if we may be able to discover common ancestors to the Isle of Man. Currently there is an excellent resource at http://www.familytreedna.com/public/ManxYDNA/http://www.familytreedna.com/public/ManxYDNA/ administered by John Creerwho started the website with the express goal to clarify more accurately the Y-DNA identification of the Manx and to identify which of their neighbors they are closest to genetically. The earliest records I have reviewed regarding the Kewley surname are from the Manx Manorial rolls 1511/1515 which identify 7 male Kewley’s
Donald Mc Kewley
Doncan Mc Kewley
Mark Mc Kewley
Michael Mc Kewley
Mold Mc Kewley
Thomlyn Mc Kewley
There may be other’s not listed from this time but it would be safe to assume that the majority of us descend from one of these families. Since there are limited records and common names with confusing paper documentation the most logical choice might well be genetic testing to group or eliminate families. If you are interested my sample on FTDNA is #188545 (Thomas Kewley ca. 1759 Kirk Marown) with an Ysearch of MZEGP for more information.
