My Great Great Grandfather was John Kivell(also spelt Kivel on many old documents I have)He was born New Brunswick Nova Scotia Canada 7 Sep 1826. John Kivell came to New Zealand in 1851 adn married Mary Jane Old. Mary Jane Old was from Cornwell, England and arrived in New Zealand on the "Essex" with the first settlers in 1842.
John was the son of Andrew and Sarah Kivell.
The charlotte County Census 1851 indicates the following: Kievll Andrew, age 60, Irish (labourer) came to New Brunswick 1823:wife,Sarah 55, and Children, all born in New Brunswick: John 22 (Mariner),Mary 20,Elizabeth 18, Patrick16, Edward 12, James 10, also Mary 25, Irish Daughter- in -law came 1856 and her daughter Sarah, 8.

The "St Andrews Standard" newpaper of 3 July 1850 has the following obituary;"On his passage from New Orleans to this port on board the barque "Laconic," Mr William Kivel,2nd Mate of that vessel, 27, leaving a wife and a large circle of friend to mourn his death"

Another obituary that appeared on 9 January 1867 was that of my Great Great Great Grandfather: "On 4th inst.Mr Andrew Kivel in his 74th year of age a native of County Armagh, Ireland, and for the last last 45 years a resident of this place." This information was obtained from the Charlotte County Historical Society St Andrews in 1986.

I would be interested if I have any ancestry in common with anyone!

Janet
