Greetings, Some researchers may not be aware that in recent years the General Archives in Karlsruhe, Germany has been indexing and posting to the internet, free of charge, available names of those who emigrated from Southwest Germann (Baden, Württemberg and Hohenzollern)during the last few centuries. They’ve now posted about 260,000 names and continue to add more each year. In total, there were about 1,800,000 German emigrants, so they still have a long way to go. Below are all the Kettner/Kittner names that have thus far been posted to the site. I could find no Ketners. The extreme right-hand column lists the person’s last place of residence as shown on the emigration forms. Please understand that the location may not actually be where the person was from. It only means it was the last place of residence as provided by the emigran t at the time of application. That said, it turned out that my own emigrant ancestor had accurately listed his last place of residence…later proven by the town’s LDS microfilmed Catholic Church records, written in old German script, but that’s another story. So how does one access and use the index…in English? Piece of cake. The below URL will take you to the web site. Once there, click “English”. On the next page click “Search for Emigrants”. On the next page click “Standard”. The final page enables you to type in the names of your emigrant ancestors. Then click “Search Data”. Recommendation: On your initial search type in both the first and last names of your emigrant. Forget all the other stuff. I’ve found it’s not needed. If you get no hits, go back and eliminate the first name and search again. Try any and all spelling variations. And be sure to add the site to your favorites listing. Remember, they’re continually adding names...you’ll want to go back. If when doing additional name searches the site says the page has expired, just click refresh and you’re again off and running. That page expiration thingy is a pain, but we’ll just have to live with it. Should your search pop up a name that rings a bell there should be a small, blue magnifying glass next to it. Click it and additional info will be displayed. For example, this is the additional info for Johann Adam Kettner: Emigrant identification:296391 First name: Johann Adam Last name: Kettner Emigration year:1833 Continent: Nordamerika Last place of residence: Werbach Number of adults: 2 Comments: mit Frau und Kindern; gestorben; Country of destination: Nordamerika County: nicht zuweisbar Archive: Generallandesarchiv Karlsruhe (Note: “mit Frau and Kinder; gestorben” means “with wife and child; died”. "Nicht Zuweisbar" means “Not allocatable” (probably another way of saying unknown or not listed). Lastly, from what I understand the emigrant identification number is the person’s original emigration file number. Supposedly, using it one can write to or e-mail the Baden General Archives to obtain a complete copy, but be prepared to shell out a few bucks. I’ve been there…thought they were going to charge me to breath their air.
