Hi Christine,
I wanted to clarify a bit what Angela has posted, because she didn't get it entirely correct (almost though).
1.James Courtney married Martha Bryan.James is the son of George W. Courtney and Elizabeth Ensor.James and Martha had a son, born in 1843, named James George W. Courtney. If I recall correctly, some folks seem to believe this James George W. Courtney was born in Monroe County, TN.I have never found any evidence of such and I would imagine that most of the folks making this claim, have never found any evidence of this nature either (it's probably being passed around from file to file). However, just because I haven't found any evidence of his birth in Monroe County, doesn't mean that he wasn't actually born there; only that I have not found anything that would indicate his birth taking place outside of Jefferson or Greene County.
2.George Washington Courtney (1826-1909), who married Rebecca McPheron, is the child of James Courtney and Elizabeth McBroom. For those who might question this, I will refer you to the following:
2A.Daniel Haun deed to James Courtney for 200 acres of land, etered into 11 August 1836.Registered 08 May 1837, Jefferson County, TN.
2B.George W. Courtney deed to Silas Courtney for 200 acres of land, entered into 16 September 1852. Registered 16 December 1853, Jefferson County, TN.
That should provide sufficient evidence showing that this George W. Courtney is the child of James Courtney and Elizabeth McBroom.
3.I have no idea where this notion of an Eleanor Hobbs came from.I have never found any evidence of it myself.Seems like a fable to me.
Note to Christine:You may want to update (when time allows) the portion of your website dealing with deaths.I believe you had Rebecca McPheron (wife of George W. Courtney), recorded as Rebecca McPheron Kesterson (or something of that nature; Kesterson was part of the name).Probably just an oversight, but she was not a Kesterson at any time in her life.
Regards,
Morgan H Courtney
