One of my great grandmothers was Mary KERWIN of Ireland. Perhaps your ancestor was Kewin. The "W" would be pronounced like a "V" by Germanic immigrants. Seeing how most Irish at one time were illiterate, perhaps it got spelled with a V by a German speaking priest or government official.
