Thanks Stuart: You may be on to something with Prussion connection and religious background.
I can remember as a little boy,neighbirs calling my Dad as "Kirschstein" ; alos famil oral history says origin of name is "kerstenstein" where kersten is old German for Christian, and stein is rock...or Christiansrock, a place in Prussia. All this is somewhat unconfirmed, but I am keeping up the search.
