Don't lose hope on this one. The name you've given looks good it is a family
name. The family were very close lipped on their origins and relations but that
doesn't mean to say there aren't clues.
See if any of this matches up-John Kerr b 1860ish left Belfast for Canada circa 1890. Definitely had a family in BC as his nephew (he went to Canada as a seaman around 1910 and stayed around Vancouver for the rest of his life, died about 1966) visited them around 1913 I note from his letter he does not mention John in person just "John's family" there's also a photograph of him with a family group which does not include an older man although there is a much younger (teenage?) man (possibly your John William?). So I presume the original John had either died or left the family by then. I have more if this seems tie in. Let me know
