I love old grist mills and the Kerns family operated mills in Maryland and Virginia. I don't have a Ricketts connection other that my distant ancestors came from Maryland. William Ricketts (died 1765) was recorded as William Rickels, but his grandson who was my 3rd great grandfather used Ricketts. Perhaps they didn't cross the T. This grandson William Ricketts, who died in 1832, recieved a 1780 land grant and bought adjacent land in 1786. His father-in-law, Ambrose Nelson (the third of that name) had nearby land. He was from Anne Andrundel County, Maryland as I suspect were the Ricketts. There were many Ricketts in Maryland even in the 1700s. William is so common, that research is difficult. Back to the earlier William Ricketts. He received two 400-acre land grants on Sandy River in Halifax County, Virginia in 1753. When Pittsylvania was taken from Halifax in 1767, two years after his death, one tract in the area of Trelow was in Pittsylvania. The "home tract" on Sandy River was in both counties. When his grandson bought land in 1786, he was said to be of Henry County, so the home was on the western part of the tract. I now live about six or seven miles from the 1780 land grant property.
