No, I never lived in Iowa. But I had ancestors there in Harrison Co. starting in the mid-1800s.

I had Philip Kirlin and Mary Gormley as the parents of Patrick, Michael, John, Philip, etc. (I think my great aunt put that info together). And it seems to be confirmed somewhat by the 1925 Iowa census for La Grange Co. That year they recorded parents and there is a John whose parents were Philip Kirlin and Catherine Gormley.

A cousin did some research years ago, and he says that the name was Carolan or O'Carolan in Ireland.
