My husband's family are from Co Down in Northern Ireland. We had believed the name originated in Germany (Prussia) but are unable to find any proof. The name was originally Carlin, Curlin, and any thing else starting with C as there was no K in the Gaelic alphabet. Carolin is another version. KIRLIN was a popular variant in Tyrone and Derry and there are KIRLINs and CARLINs in America and have been since the 1600s. These migrated from Ireland.

Many Irish folk went to Scotland where they became involved in Jute spinning and weaving - an off shoot from their Linen/Flax heritage.

David's ancestors were in Scotland some 250 years ago.
