Hi Rachel,
I know you are related to Kenneth. We have been in constant contact. He is an amazing person. All that I know about Larkin's Book is that he interviewed his living relatives at that time, so I think that it should be quite accurate. As far as the DAR is concerned, I have not been able to confirm that James Alexander served in the war, and I don't believe that he did, but his brother Thomas did. I saw that he (Thomas)was captured and kept on a prison ship. This info is in the DAR records. Their name was spelled "Kewn" in the 1790 census and I have learned that the name was pronounced that way in Ireland. My family has always pronounced our name as "Cowan", but I was corrected by a man who grew up in Ireland and had a close friend named Keown. He pronounced it "KEWN".
Hope this helps....keep in touch. Ray
